Robert Kubica will be released from hospital on Monday morning, having sustained just a sprained ankle and a light concussion in his violent crash today, his doctors confirmed.

The Polish driver crashed heavily on lap 27 of the Canadian Grand Prix, and was airlifted to the Sacre-Couer hospital in Montreal.

But despite widespread reports claiming that he has a broken leg, the hospital said Kubica has sustained minor injuries and confirmed he will be released after a precautionary overnight observation.

"Following the violent accident during today's Canadian GP, Robert Kubica was transferred by helicopter to Sacre-Couer hospital in Montreal," the hospital said in a statement originally issued in French.

"When he arrived at the emergency care unit Kubica was placed in the hands of Dr Ronald Denis, chief medical officer of the Canadian Grand Prix, and also head of the surgical department and trauma department at the hospital.

"Mr Kubica has been through all the necessary medical checks and there do not appear to be any serious consequences as a result of the accident.

"He is suffering from light concussion, as well as a sprained right ankle. He is in a stable condition and his life is not considered to be in danger.

"He will remain in hospital overnight for observation and his condition will be checked again tomorrow morning."

BMW Sauber?s Robert Kubica has escaped serious injury after crashing heavily in Sunday?s Canadian Grand Prix. Kubica suffered a light concussion and a sprained ankle in the high-speed accident.

Kubica left the track on the run down to the hairpin, after making contact with the rear of Jarno Trulli's Toyota. The BMW Sauber became airborne, hitting a wall in the centre of circuit, before rolling to halt at the hairpin entry, with little more than its monocoque intact.

Kubica was extracted from the car and transferred to the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve?s medical centre, where he was able to speak with his manager. He was then airlifted to Sacre-Coeur hospital in Montreal by medical helicopter for further checks and is expected to be released on Monday.

"It seemed a terribly long time, even though it was only minutes before I got the information that Robert is conscious and able to talk," said BMW's Mario Theissen. "According to the first medical reports, Robert has escaped this very heavy accident relatively unscathed."

A decision regarding Kubica's participation in next weekend's United States Grand Prix will be taken at Indianapolis on Thursday

BMW to decide on Kubica on Thursday

By Pablo Elizalde Monday, June 11th 2007, 09:08 GMT

The BMW Sauber team will have to wait until Thursday before making a decision on whether Robert Kubica will be able to race at the United States Grand Prix this weekend.

The Pole is in hospital following his massive accident during the Canadian Grand Prix, although doctors have said he sustained just a sprained ankle and a light concussion and he could be released today.

BMW, however, said they will need to wait until Thursday before finding out who will drive alongside Nick Heidfeld in Indianapolis.

The German squad have two test drivers, Timo Glock and Sebastian Vettel.

'Lucky' Kubica hopes to race at Indy

 Monday, June 11th 2007, 16:43 GMT

Robert Kubica left a Montreal hospital on Monday, hoping to race at Indianapolis this weekend after emerging unscathed from an horrific crash in Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix.

"As you see I'm quite in good shape and I'm hoping (to be) going to Indianapolis if the doctors will say OK for my driving," Kubica told reporters outside Montreal's Sacre-Coeur Hospital.

"I feel very good. I was very lucky - big accident, but fortunately nothing hurt," he added after walking gingerly down the steps of the hospital.

Kubica said he remembered "nearly everything" about the crash.

The accident occurred when the 22-year-old BMW Sauber driver's car made contact with the rear wheels of Jarno Trulli's Toyota on the approach to the hairpin on lap 27 on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit.

His car took off, flying through the air and slamming into a concrete wall before barrel-rolling across the track.

The crash shattered Kubica's car to the extent that his feet could be seen through the sheared off front end of the vehicle.

A BMW spokeswoman said Kubica, who suffered only a sprained right ankle and light concussion, had driven himself away from the hospital.

The Pole will have a mandatory fitness test at Indianapolis on Thursday before being allowed to compete in the US Grand Prix, but the team were confident he would be racing.
