Germany's most successful top sportspeople have decided: from among their ranks they have voted javelin throw world champion Johannes Vetter "Champion of the Year 2017". In addition to the coveted award, the winner traditionally receives a smart of his choice. For the 18th time, the urban mobility brand was a premium partner of the event, at which the most successful summer and winter sportspeople of the past year elect their champion. The event was held at the invitation of the German Sports Help Foundation from 23 to 30 September 2017 at the ROBINSON Club Apulia on the south coast of Italy.

The participants at this unique event for sportspeople enthusiastically seized the opportunity to thoroughly try out the coupé and cabrio versions of the smart electric drive as well as the four-seater (combined power consumption: 12.9-13.1 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km). smart is the only automotive brand to offer its entire model range with the option of a battery-electric powertrain. The Champion of the Year, Johannes Vetter receives a smart electric drive. In 2017, the 24-year-old professional soldier from Dresden/Germany reached a highlight in his career by winning the javelin throw world championships in London. The reigning world champion is also the German champion and convinced by a successful year.

smart – long-standing involvement in top-class sport

As part of the company's sport sponsorship activities, smart supports beach volleyball. The mobility brand has been actively involved in beach volleyball as an event partner for 13 years and supports three top teams from Germany, Austria and Italy.

Among them are the current Rio de Janeiro Olympic champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst. London 2012 Olympic champions Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann also act as brand ambassadors for smart.
