First time C Class buyer
« on: December 08, 2006, 10:15:56 PM »
So, if someone were to buy a nice reliable used C Class for approx $15-20k, which is the best one, and why? Which year/engine is best? Reliability must be a pretty sure thing.

Also - if there is a better used MB to acquire in the $8-15k range - what would it be? Leave diesel out of the equation.

My choice will be a W124 300 series of mid 90's. One of the most solid durable, proven car. Reasonable to maintain.

Okay - I will look for one of these perhaps. I see some sedans under $10k.

Is the 3.0 or the 3.2 better? And is 4-matic a problem?

3.2 is definately better. I've been told to stay away from 4-matic. I know for a fact it cost an arm and leg for repairs.

Well.... I return to ponder the eventual sedan purchase. Among other choices, I think MB could be the right time with so many available for very reasonable price.

I wonder about the 2001 C240 (W203) - I read up, and note it is much improved safety over W202... but reliability is not so sure? Specifically - I want a 5 or 6 speed car... and the 2001+ with the 2.6 and 6 speed seem to be a great package...

But I defer to those who know more through experience

Oops... I have too much power, I removed a reply by Eddy. I don't think this is suppoed to be possible?

You mention last two years of W202 230 turbo as being your choice, priced at the time, mid to low teens... I think now 10k is realistic for this, but I like the W203 style better.....

That would had been a 230 Kompressor I was talking about. But to date, the W203 had lowered the price so much; it is a better buy for a newer car. Not that the W202 doesn't worth $10k.
