CL 65 AMG and CLK 63 AMG Black Series: Two extra-special AMG high-performance cars to mark the 40th anniversary of AMG

Los Angeles, May 08, 2007
Mercedes-AMG is showcasing two very special high-performance vehicles to mark its 40th anniversary in the form of the CL 65 AMG and the CLK 63 AMG Black Series. The new top-of-the-line-model, the CL 65 AMG with its powerful V12 biturbo engine delivering 450 kW/612 hp and 1000 Newton metres of torque, represents the ultimate in driving dynamics. The "40th Anniversary" edition painted in an exclusive Alubeam finish and limited to just 40 vehicles has also been brought out to commemorate a very special date: AMG, the performance brand of the Mercedes Car Group, was founded in 1967 and celebrates its 40th birthday in 2007. The new CLK 63 AMG Black Series represents a transition from motorsport in its purest form. This super-fast V8 coup? bears a strong visual and technological resemblance to the official F1? safety car. With its sophisticated cooling technology and new AMG sports suspension featuring spring and shock absorber units with adjustable coil springs, this 373-kW/507-hp two-seater car comes with all the right credentials for hard campaigning on the racing circuit.
Following on from the S 65 AMG and the SL 65 AMG, the new CL 65 AMG is the third AMG model to have the mighty AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine under its bonnet. This exclusive high-performance car posts outstanding performance figures: 100 km/h is reached in 4.4 seconds and 200 km/h after just 13.3 seconds in the V12-powered coup?. The high-torque engine distinguishes itself with its refined running and unmistakable AMG V12 sound. The standard specification for the new CL 65 AMG includes not only AMG bodystyling, an exclusive AMG interior, the PRE SAFE? anticipatory occupant protection system and 20-inch AMG forged wheels, but also the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control (ABC), and the AMG high-performance brake system featuring twin sliding callipers. The market launch of the CL 65 AMG is due to commence in June 2007.

An even more exclusive specification is offered by the "40th Anniversary" limited-edition model which marks 40 years of AMG. This special breed of CL 65 AMG is the first Mercedes-Benz production vehicle to be finished in AMG Alubeam. This unique paint finish gives the colour the appearance of liquid metal and appears even more vibrant by reflecting the light in a particular way. Inside, the CL 65 AMG "40th Anniversary" makes a distinctive impression with two-tone all-nappa-leather appointments in the new AMG V12 diamond pattern, plus carbon-fibre trim.

CLK 63 AMG Black Series: close kinship with the official F1? safety car

The CLK 63 AMG Black Series makes its mark with other highlights - although, like the limited-edition CL 65 AMG "40th Anniversary", it was also developed in the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO. This lightning fast two-seater V8 coup? takes its cue from the official F1? safety car that is in action at the Formula 1 World Championship races. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 unit, whose output has been boosted to 373 kW/507 hp, propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, accompanied by a powerful AMG V8 soundtrack issuing from the new AMG sports exhaust system. Carefully honed for the race track, the coup? incorporates sophisticated cooling measures for maximum endurance no matter how hard it is driven.

This performance is matched by the power transmission, suspension and brakes. The modified AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC with its shorter rear-axle final drive ratio is designed for even greater agility at any speed. Not only have the front and rear axles been redesigned for optimum handling dynamics, the new AMG sports suspension comprising spring and shock absorber units with adjustable coil springs enables a personalised suspension setup, including the ride-height setting. A rear-axle limited-slip differential provides optimum traction, while the AMG high-performance brake system with thicker, composite brake discs at the front delivers tremendous stopping power. Astonishing cornering speeds are made possible by the standard tyres, which measure 265/30 R 19 at the front and 285/30 R 19 at the rear and are mounted on extra-light 19-inch AMG forged wheels.

Pure motorsport: exterior and interior of the CLK 63 AMG Black Series

The CLK 63 AMG Black Series closely resembles the official F1? safety car visually too. A new front apron with large air intakes and carbon-fibre outlets at the sides, flared wings and a rear apron with diffusor fins plus active rear-axle cooling are telltale signs of the transfer of technology from motorsport, something which has been part and parcel of Mercedes-AMG's business philosophy for 40 years now. The uncompromising tone is echoed inside the car. AMG sports bucket seats (on the ECE version), an AMG performance steering wheel with an oval rim and a diameter of 365 millimetres, as well as carbon-fibre trim on the centre console, the AMG instrument cluster and the interior door panelling combine to create the functional atmosphere of a genuine racing car.
The CLK 63 AMG Black Series will be receiving its market launch in June 2007.
