AFFALTERBACH, Germany ? Mercedes said on Monday it will roll out a more powerful version of its vintage G-Class in September.

The G55 AMG Kompressor model will be equipped with a supercharged 5.5-liter AMG engine that churns out 500 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The G55 AMG will start at the equivalent of $144,560.

Mercedes said the G55 AMG accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 5.5 seconds and has a maximum speed of 130 mph. Enhanced standard equipment includes new AMG light alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlamps, foglamps with a cornering light function, and new paint finishes in calcite white, periclase green metallic and teallite blue metallic with greater scratch resistance based on nanotechnology.

Other standard features include an electronic traction system for the all-wheel-drive system, an electronic stability program and differential locks. The company says the top-of-the-line model in the G-Class is available only as a 5-door station wagon with a long wheelbase.

The G-Class made its debut in 1979.

What this means to you: The G-Class continues to make inroads as one of the world's most powerful, prestigious ? and pricey ? off-roaders.
