Canadian GP decision expected Friday

The Montreal government is expected to announce tomorrow whether it will invest the necessary money to get the Canadian Grand Prix back on the 2009 calendar.

Government officials met with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone last week for negotiations and Montreal mayor Gerald Tremblay called the meeting "encouraging and constructive" in Canadian newspaper The Montreal Journal, but did not reveal how much money it will take for the race to be reinstated.

Even if the government does settle the contract dispute with Ecclestone, a promoter still needs to be found for the event following the withdrawal of the previous promoters.

Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team owner George Gillett has been linked with the race, but is yet to confirm his interest.

Gillett was previously on the board of the former Champ Car event in Denver and is a co-owner of the Gillett Evernham Motorsports NASCAR Sprint Cup team, which runs Kasey Kahne (No.9), Elliott Sadler (No.19) and recently AJ Allmendinger (No.10).
