Mercedes have confirmed that they are testing six drivers at Mugello this week to assess their abilities.
The test, which starts on Thursday, will be attended by five Formula Three drivers, plus Nicolas Kiesa, who has raced for Audi in the series in the past.
British F3 champion Marko Asmer and his title rival Maro Engel are testing, along with Euro Series trio Yelmer Buurman, Renger van der Zande and Cyndie Alleman.
A Mercedes spokesperson told autosport.com: "We can confirm that these six drivers are testing this week in a 2006-spec car. It's just to present their talents."
Buurman took part in a similar test last year, and the Dutch driver told Autosport: "It's a great opportunity again. After the test we'll see what's possible. I'd like to do DTM, but it all depends on Mercedes."
There will be two 2006-spec Mercedes on the grid next year.
Too bad I'm not one of them.
