Nico Rosberg described claiming the first podium finish for the rebranded Mercedes GP team as a “fantastic” result in Malaysia, especially as he knew he wouldn’t be able to keep up with the Red Bulls once both got ahead at the start.
The German driver admitted he got too much wheelspin from his front-row position at the start, which allowed eventual race winner Sebastian Vettel through, and then struggled with the soft tyre in the first stint.
Therefore he believes the team has to be delighted as it is the best result it could have achieved.
“It’s a fantastic result for us today, I’m quite pleased,” he said.
“Unfortunately the start didn’t go too well for us today. I think actually this time it was quite a lot down to me. I just wanted a bit too much and got too much wheelspin, and lost out a bit there.
“From then once I was third I knew it was going to be difficult to follow the Red Bulls, but I was struggling a bit in the first stint with the options.
“I don’t know why – we need to analyse that – and Kubica could stay pretty close which wasn’t really the plan.
“But anyway, once we did the pit stop and got on the prime [tyre] I was very comfortable.
“I was a bit worried about Hamilton initially because I didn’t really know how he was going to come up after his pit stop, I was expecting him to be very fast, but apparently he didn’t get by the people behind me.”
Rosberg - whose team-mate Michael Schumacher dropped out early on with a rear wheel problem - acknowledged it was good timing for the former Brawn team to return to the podium on title sponsor Petronas’s home soil.
He added hat it now needs to use the result as a platform from which to go on and improve its raw pace.
“It’s a fantastic result for us here at one of our home grands prix, because obviously we have the backing from Petronas and a lot of support at this race, so it’s a great coincidence that the first podium comes over here too,” he said.
“We definitely need to push on because we’re not where we want to be, but it’s a great step in the right direction.”
