Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher has won Spain's top international sporting honour, the Principe de Asturias sports award.

The German, who retired from Formula One at the end of last season, beat MotoGP's Valentino Rossi, tennis player Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, and pole vault world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva.

Schumacher beat the joint candidature of Nadal and Federer by 16 votes to 12.

On top of his sporting success, the judges also recognised his humanitarian work and efforts to help the under-privileged in the world of sport.

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso had won the award in 2005 following his first title.
